It may be a cliche, but I don't care:
What's your favorite Robbins book? Why?
Mine is "Still Life" because it was my first exposure to his genius - I was IN LOVE with his writing by page 2.

Re: The Obvious Question
Sun, July 17, 2005 - 2:23 PMHi everyone!
My favorite Robbins book is usually the one I'm reading at the moment..but I'd have to say "Another Roadside Attraction" has a special place because it was the first one I read. Once I discovered this book, I read three more of his books in a matter of a few weeks...now they're all mixed up in my memory. But then again, I can always reread them!

Re: The Obvious Question
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 11:38 AMIt's a close 3-way between Cowgirls, Frog Pajamas, and Skinny Legs and All.
I read Woodpecker first as well, and still like it of course - but it just doesn't have as much meat as some of the others.

Re: The Obvious Question
Wed, July 20, 2005 - 7:26 PMSo far I've read "Another Roadside Attraction"...Loved it! Now I'm about half way finished with "Fierce Invalids"...so far...Love it.
I watched "50 First Dates" a couple days ago...Drew Barrymore's character was reading "Woodpecker". I just thought it was kinda cool that's all. -

Re: The Obvious Question
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 8:48 PMSpeaking of "Fierce Invalids...," I started it but couldn't finish it! Unprecendented, I assure you. I was turned off by the pedophilia in the story line and quite disappointed by the book's lack of usual Robbinseque razor wit on every page. No worries, though. This is by no means the end of the road for us. -

Re: The Obvious Question
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 2:14 PMHmmmm........ not sure I would describe Switters' passing lust after his 16-year-old (and quite obviously post-pubescent) step-sister as "Pedophilia". Incestual, perhaps.......
And bits of FI were some of his most witty, I though.

Re: The Obvious Question
Sun, December 11, 2005 - 8:52 AMFierce Invalids, then Skinny Legs.
To me, however, the most obvious question is,
"now that I've read the entertaining but disappointing 'Wild Ducks', when do we get another NOVEL?"

Re: The Obvious Question
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 4:58 PMMy favorite would have to be Jitterbug Perfume... I loved the Pan character who fits perfectly into Tom's hedonist tendencies :) Immortality, lust, and scent - all weaved together by a beet.
My 2nd favorite is Skinny Legs and All (being a belly dancer I appreciated the main character and then had to research the ellusive dance of the seven veils).
But I have to admit they're all brilliant... Another Roadside Attraction, Still Life, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues... Tom's humor and writing style constantly catch my attention. I want to meet him! Can you imagine hanging out having a beer and discussing life with him? -

Re: The Obvious Question
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 3:47 PMI would list Jitterbug Perfume in first place; I've bought it second hand just to pass it on to friends. Also, have soft spots for Skinny Legs and All; Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (back when I was drinking Tequila), Still Life with Woodpecker; Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas and Villa Incognito. That's not to say I don't rate Another Roadside Attraction, Fierce Invalids, Wild Ducks Flying Backwards — but they're my preferences.

Re: The Obvious Question
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 6:43 AMI'm going to stick my neck out and admit that "Fierce Invalids...." is my favorite.
I can relate to Switters extreme contradictions. I think he deals with the incest
taboo in an honest and fearless way, as is his usual style . Remember, it is fiction
and nothing actually happens.
I’m currently reading “Wild Ducks Flying Backward”. His tribute to Joseph Campbell and The Doors are among his best.

Re: The Obvious Question
Sun, March 12, 2006 - 2:48 PMi'd have to say jitterbug perfume is definitely my favorite. infact i named my band after a line from it: the incandescent beet leaves
skinny legs and all would be my second favorite and then even cowgirls get the blues... even though i've been reading them all in the last few years i feel i want to reread them again already. just awesome stuff. i would love to see him in a book tour but i never heard of any for "wild ducks" -

Re: The Obvious Question
Fri, May 5, 2006 - 12:41 PMit a close 5-way tie ;) but i'd have to say jitterbug perfume...i also enjoy the pan character...and Villa incognito....frog pajamas would probably be third, no, another roadside attraction, no, i mean woodpecker, no....AAAAAHHHH!!! It's not possible ;) :) but perfume and villa are def. at the top. i read them all the time!

Re: The Obvious Question
Fri, May 5, 2006 - 1:37 PMI always seem to go back to "Still Life", as it was also my first exposure. It truly depends on where I am in my life-what pearls of wisdom I seek out from this man. :) But, when I just need a quick break from it all, indeed my fav is "Fuck Yes". :) It sums up many of my annoyances with most everything and what is constantly swirling in my head in response to the crap we are bombarded with everyday!!! God bless him!!!

Re: The Obvious Question
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 9:29 PMranking my favorites
1. Jitterbug Perfume
2. Skinny Legs and All
3. Fierce Invalids
4. Another Roadside Attraction
5. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
6. Villa Incognito
7. Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas
Am I missing one? that's off the top of my head. And Frog Pajamas is good, but it's by far my least favorite of his. Kinda boring.
I like Tom's male characters the most. Switters, Pan, the Chink, Satsumi (that's the fox in VI right?)
wish he'd write another one. i read all those too fast. although i did just get Another Roadside Attraction at this used book store, and I'll be skimming it on the toilet for awhile.

Re: The Obvious Question
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:19 PMmy first was also Still Life and i am currently on my last of his novels: Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas but i have to say that Jitterbug takes the cake and smashes ur face in it! fierce invalids is a close second. i love his rants and his writing style is almost like poetry. he could convince me the world was flat if he wanted to. i think Jitterbug is my favorite because it has the best story; i feel anyway.
